Research on forced labour in Indian brick kilns and garment factories is not much use if it never reaches the workers it describes. This module was built to close some of that gap. It lays out the environmental and labour risks workers in those industries face – heat, chemical exposure, dust, flooding, rights violations – in plain language and in the languages workers actually speak.
Four versions exist: English, Hindi, Punjabi, and Bengali. The geographic focus covers the brick kiln belt running through Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, and garment manufacturing hubs in the same region.
What it covers
The module explains what the research found about hazard exposure and forced labour risk in these sectors, what constitutes a rights violation under Indian labour law, and what routes exist for workers and community organisations to raise concerns. It draws on the University of Nottingham’s Slavery from Space project and the broader India brick kilns research programme.
